How to address the stress

Life is a constant challenge, and particularly so at the moment with the world trying to deal and learn to live with COVID-19. There is always something around the corner to stress you out, and it is important to know that you can deal with anything that comes your way.

My most stressful time is when money is tight and I worry as a ssingle parent that I won’t be able to provide as much for my kids when I have to. It is a constant and extremely stressful battle and one which I feel that I am constantly losing, but by setting a budget and sticking to it and taking other measures to keep an eye on my financial situation I have managed to relieve some of the stress. I made (and make) lists, I organise when bills are due and plan around those and sometimes swallowing my pride and calling creditors to ask for more time. There is nothing wrong with that.

So what is the best way to address the stress? We are all different, we respond to stress differently and we de-stress differently. Think of when you are at your most relaxed. Picture yourself doing that activity. How do you feel now?

I love to get out into the fresh air and golf is my thing. I can take myself out to the course, be in my own thoughts and no matter how good or bad I play, I find myself re-focused and with a clear mind to tackle the next of life’s challenges.

Another favourite place for me is the ocean. It has a magnetic attraction for me that is like no other thing or place. The salty air, the sun and ocean breezes seem to flow right through me and invigorate me enormously.

My favourite way to de-stress? To spend time with family and friends. To chill out, chat and just BE! I know that this has been severely restricted for a long time now, but the future in relation to COVID is becoming more clear and more certain as the days go by and knowing that we can soon have that human interaction we so sorely crave (and need) is important for our collective mental and physical health.

What is YOUR thing? Whatever it is that you like to do to get back on track and get rid of the stresses of being a human with a life, it is simply important to identify what relaxes you best and know that you have that to turn to when life is at its toughest. It is defintely okay take a moment to yourself – it is not selfish, or lazy. It is necessary for your survival.

Just remember. The sun always rises the next day and with it you can be strong and face whatever challenges come your way.
