I love sport, and exercising, and being outdoors. I love the taste of fresh air in my lungs. Unfortunately I have a very busy desk job that permits limited time on weekdays and usually only one day of each weekend. But whose fault is that?
I am great at having good ideas about plans or hobbies and the best intentions about exercise or self improvement and I am the kind of person that you might nickname “Gunna”. I am the guy that sees a thread on social media, buys the gadget and then lets it sit idle for God knows how long and use them sparingly.
Those who know me best know that I am extremely self critical and have struggled with a positive self image pretty much since my teens. I am also not the person who seeks the spotlight and if it shines on me then I am extremely self conscious and can’t wait for it to be over.
So does that mean the gadget buying and the procrastination are unavoidable? I am coming to the realisation that, NO, it is not. I have slowly started to force myself to accept that nothing happens without action, which means I have to get off my arse and actually DO things to obtain that self improvement, in whatever aspect of life I am aiming to place it.
There is a version of my best self that I want to become – to be as fit as I can be, to be as mentally healthy as I can be and to not leave anything to chance. That encompasses how I see myself and how I project myself to others. In short, I need to stop being what I think other people see, and just act on becoming that ultimate best version of myself, to be happy with who and how I am, how I look and how I behave.
The time for ideas is over. At my age surely I can accept that I am how I am through lived experiences, and that I can use those experiences to help myself become that Ultimate Me by actually DOING something about it? I know it will take some getting used to but one day I will be so used to doing things that are good for me that I will naturally be in that spot in life where I am happy and proud of the man I am. Won’t that be wonderful.
